It's a Mud Management Problem, Not a Tool Problem! Our field data and lab analysis consistently support the understanding that many tool failures and drilling inefficiencies trace back to poor solids control—not faulty equipment. Here's what we know: Telemetry Disruption High drilled solids content interferes with mud pulse telemetry, reducing data quality. Pressure pulses are softened, signal attenuation is weakened, and reliable communication from downhole tools becomes compromised. Directional Control Issues Elevated solids can affect directional drilling performance, increasing the risk of unintentional wellbore deviation. This often leads to greater dogleg severity and a more tortuous hole profile. Particle Size Distribution (PSD) PSD trends reflect mud degradation over time. As particles are ground finer, their surface area increases, and they begin to act like an abrasive slurry, accelerating wear on tools and equipment. Quartz Content Quartz, with its Mohs hardness of 7, is one of the most abrasive solids commonly found in drilling fluids. When quartz exceeds 3–7% by weight, excessive tool wear and erosion follow. Our analyses repeatedly identify quartz as the primary culprit. Iron Filings and RSS Failures Iron content from casing wear or tool degradation accumulates in drilling fluids. XRF analysis helps track these levels over multiple wells. Elevated iron filings are a known contributor to rotary steerable system (RSS) failures.
